BIOGRAPHY

Tom Hubbard is a mixed media artist whose work spans a variety of mediums and blurs the lines between the disciplines of photography, ceramics and graphic design in which he is trained. His works are multifaceted and highly personal, drawn entirely from his own experiences, be it a personal quest to learn about his father killed in the war in Vietnam or simply to connect with his new home in The Netherlands. Through his work, Tom seeks to better understand the world around him and the viewer is given a unique insight into his quest.

As a professional graphic designer, Tom spent nearly twenty years solving visual communication problems and developing branding solutions for clients across the United States. From identity programs to annual reports, packaging to limited edition books his work has been honored by numerous regional and national organizations. Hubbard’s ceramic work, primarily raku fired vessels, is strongly influenced by his design background. This work combines simple minimalist forms with typographic elements and grid patterns. Larger sculptural vessels combine text and his photographic images. Hubbard’s photographic constructions combine ethereal black & white images and found or salvaged materials with layered text and symbols often obscured through layers of encaustic medium.

Equally comfortable with a camera or found objects, kiln or encaustic wax, Tom practices his own form of alchemy and creates works that are uniquely his own and often bridge the past and the present, the personal and the historical.

Hubbard’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the US and The Netherlands and is included in several private and corporate collections.

Tom Hubbard was born at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA in 1964. He received a BFA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Hubbard currently lives in The Netherlands with his wife and their two children.
